The cultural dependency on car ownership affects road safety, greenhouse gas emissions and the accessibility of jobs, healthcare and fresh food to lower income residents. More so, existing public transportation systems are inefficient, inaccessible and harmful to the environment.
Smart Columbus is changing public transit by developing an open and integrated operating system, implementing an electric grid powered by renewables and establishing a regional network of electric vehicle chargers. Other initiatives include launching one of the first autonomous shuttle services in the U.S., on-demand reimbursed rides to health appointments for expectant mothers and trip assistance for those with cognitive disabilities.
