International efforts to stabilize Somalia and rebuild national state institutions have largely failed. Children and young adults make up the vast majority of those used to perpetuate armed conflict, keeping them stuck in a vicious cycle of intergenerational conflict. Offering young people a viable alternative to bearing a weapon is essential to the transition into sustained peace.
The Elman Peace Centre helps children and young adults rebuild their lives by providing formal education, safe houses for survivors of sexual violence, psychosocial counseling, vocational training and assistance for youths leaving armed groups to re-acquire civilian status.
