It is a critical time for LGBTQIA+ equality, especially considering recent policy and safety developments in the last two years. Since the 2016 presidential election, language referencing LGBTQIA+ rights has been removed from White House, State Department and Labor Department websites. The Departments of Justice, Education and Health and Human Services have all implemented explicit efforts to limit equality and equity for the queer community. However, the scariest trend is already well underway – each of the last three years has surpassed the former as the deadliest year on record for the LGBTQIA+ community, driven by hate crimes against LGBTQIA+ individuals.
VideoOut’s is countering anti-queer trends by building the world's largest library of coming out stories and partnering with local community members and organizations to rally storytellers to action. By amplifying the voices of those most at-risk, VideoOut confronts oppressors with stories told by real people. As of January 2019, they have produced dozens of events, recorded nearly 300 stories and reached millions of people around the world.
